Late last night, he managed to destroy his plastic cone collar and open the incision, so 6 days of healing are down the tubes. He was bleeding all over, but I managed to temporarily fix his collar with tape and give him first aid and clean the blood off his legs.

I really felt horrible last night, and had trouble sleeping. I took him to the vet's and got a new collar this morning, He was waiting in the truck, and when I described the situation to the veterinary tech, and she didn't seem concerned and didn't even want to look at him. The only danger, she said, was if it got infected. I plan to put neosporin cream on his wounds and he'll just continue to wear the collar until everything has completely healed.

I'm really getting tired of all this, and can't take this endless nursing. I did six months of it with the cat, and now the dog has become high maintenance. His previous owners never dealt with it, they put him in the backyard and eventually got rid of him.

He's a sweet dog, and he loves me totally, but I'm feeling like my reserves of energy and patience are nearing the end.

I vote for giving him a little more time. I know it's rough coming right on the heels of your cat, and dogs do require a little more mental/emotional/physical upkeep than cats, but I think you'll both be fine once you get over the initial hump. He sounds loyal and protective and it would suck to have that rewarded by more home-hopping.

It may end up not working out in the end, but at least let him show you what he's got!! :)

I took a nap, so now I'm in a better frame of mind. He's essentially a good dog, that has been let down by people. Once he's healed and we can start training classes, he'll be a great dog.

Hooray! You're a good pet owner. I'm glad you found each other.
