I did my grafting late this afternoon, but the orange buds hadn't kept well in the refrigerator. They seemed dried out, but "nothing ventured, nothing gained". I've never done this before, so it's a learning process, but I will be surprised if some actually take.

I fell asleep on the couch halfway through "American Idol" and woke up 2 hours later. The late night talk shows were all dreary, full of Charlie Sheen jokes and horrible Betty White on the Tonight Show. I ended up watching a Globe Trekker episode on Mongolia, where the highlight was hunting and cooking a marmot with the nomadic tribesmen.

I fell asleep too, and woke up to watch PBS' "Paddle to Seattle" which was a sort of homemade documentary of two friends 97 day journey paddling kayaks from Alaska to Seattle. It was so gorgeous because it was shown and filmed in HD, and I felt like I was there paddling in those cold pacific northwest waters with them. Also, they were young, handsome, and funny. These new fangled hd video cameras that are affordable to novice film makers, and the need for youth to go adventuring makes for really good couch potato traveling fodder for me. Next week's film is bicycling through china.

The nomads in Mongolia rode their horses only so close to the marmots, and then one dismounted and put a fox head hat on, and began crouching and darting towards the marmot, swishing a fox's tail. When he got closer, he managed to shoot one in the head with his ancient rifle, killing it cleanly with a single bullet. They cut off the head and pulled all the meat out though the neck cavity, They threw out the nasty bits, and put what was edible back into the body cavity, along with hot rocks. The whole hairy marmot casserole was then thrown on the fire to cook and singe off the hair.

The host said the meat was really tough, but about six nomads ate it and seemed to enjoy it. There is probably not a lot of other meat to be had on the plains of Mongolia.

Well, I think I saw that one because I remember the how puffed it got as the air expanded as it cooked and how crispy the skin seemed. The food bits are always the most interesting part of Globe Trekker and well, any travel show. The weirdest thing I saw recently was on Anthony Bourdain's show, he was in Korea eating chopped up live octopus legs and the suckers were sucking on his tongue and cheeks as he ate them. I wasn't grossed out, I love octopus.

Yes, the body was full of steam, and with the hair burned off it looked like a football with legs. If we're ever in a pinch, and come across a marmot, we'll both know what to do.
