I stopped by Home Depot and bought some tomato plants. Instead of Better Boy, I decided on the Early Girl cultivar. I found a four pack that actually had 6 plants and get this: the price was $1.68 for the entire pack.

I also bought some bush bean seeds, and instead of Blue Lake, this year I'm trying Royal Burgundy. They say pole beans produce more than bush beans but with my garden setup, pole beans would shade the tomatoes. I still need to till and add compost to the beds before planting. The soil is wet, but tomorrow it might workable.

Good luck with these! I love blue beans too because they're so easy to find when picking. Do the varieties you grow turn green on cooking? I grow Blauhilde, which does.

Yes, they turn from purple to green as they cook. They're said to be sturdy bushes, with a good flavor. The Blue Lake beans that I grew last year, tended to be vine-like. I follow a local gardening website, and these varieties are recommended, with the Early Girl tomatoes being the top pick. Some local gardeners grow these tomatoes with a dry farming technique that increases the flavor of the fruit. I believe it's an idea used in grape growing, where the water stress you put on the plants boosts the flavor.
