In the near bed, are bush beans and peppers, with the peppers in the center. The far bed has three hills of squash and a row of eggplant. If you look closely, you can see the white flower blossoms on the pepper plants, and purple bean blossoms. The eggplant is flowering, and I just noticed the first eggplant fruit forming.

This is a tangled row of tomato plants, and a little avocado tree in the far left, shaded against the afternoon sun.

There are six "Early Girl" plants pictured. I have two more "Brandywine" as well, in another spot. They are all indeterminate type, which means they grow and bear like crazy until the first frost. I tried Early Girls this year, and I'm limiting the water they get, because I have read that chef Alice Waters has said they are the best and they are tastier when watered less.

Bush beans are snap beans, the modern string bean, but have been developed to grow like a small bush, without support. The original string beans were huge vines that needed a trellis to grow on.

You know, I can't comment on posts in your journal, I am still banned.

i went early girls also. just 3 plants though. one out of 3, OK, the others, not enough sun. that is interesting about the water.

do you have any experience with basil?

They say less water equals a more flavorful tomato. I never tried basil, but I'm attempting again to grow oregano. I now have a big pot with a dozen tiny oregano plants, maybe they'll survive the summer.
