In the search for a cop-killing ex-cop, police in Southern California have mistakenly opened fire on at least two vehicles, injuring innocent people. They're sweating bullets. Hundreds of police were actively hunting Dorner in the mountains east of LA, and we're seeing images of barricaded police stations and million dollar rewards.

Police are now considered a sacred breed, with this sort of over-the-top reaction when someone has the nerve to threaten those men in blue.

You mean they don't do this every time there's a homicide?

The police actually commit many homicides. The media has an euphemism they use to report these, they call them "officer involved shootings". Sometimes people won't get out of their cars and lay on the ground when ordered, so the police execute them on the theory that the car they're sitting in is a deadly weapon.
