The GSM phones in North America operate at 1900mhz, and most GSM phones elsewhere operate at 900/1800mhz.

Urrrgh. That's what I forgot to ask you to bring back from the Philippines. I needed a new tri-band open line phone. D'oh.

If you need a basic phone that works in the US, I can send you a used Nokia 6190 GSM phone that will accept a Cingular, AT&T or Pacbell sim. I'm buying phones now, but want to send the tri-modes to the Philippines.

Thanks for the offer.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the open line triband units from the Philippines, or directly import from Taiwan or China depending on how good you want the quality? I like the European models the best though, unless something changed in the last few years, they were the sturdiest.

I can get surplus cell phones here for as little as $1, the problem is that many US models are not compatible with intl standards.

You silly goose, I'm trying to give you a used Nokia 6190! But it is not tri-mode, and will only work in North America.
