I'm one of the do-it-yourself types, and I have good tools, and enough experience, so that I can often repair simple things. I fixed my petrol-powered rotovator today, and let it run for 15 minutes. Some people look down their noses at powered garden equipment, but it will be handy this fall. With my bad knee, I'm not sure I could turn the soil without it.

As I was working on the rotovator, a lady at the livestock auction came by, and now I'm going to fix her bicycle tyre, and in exchange, get a free truckload of aged animal manure. My mechanical talent has now been rewarded with a large quantity of shit.

I started some onion seed indoors, to plant about November 1. I could plant peas, broccoli, and lettuce even sooner. I'm gathering and saving summer seeds now, from everything but the squash, because I think the squash has cross-bred, and is some weird hybrid. I'm going to place some steel poles next to the avocado trees, to give me a frame, and allow me to cover the trees when it freezes. I'm going to great lengths to nurture these trees, the goal is some avocados next year.
