Saturday reached 104, and this morning it was heating up fast. I finished outside at 10:30 AM, and it was already 94 degrees. When it reached 99, the winds shifted, and the ocean breeze from the west kicked in, cooling us down. So the heat wave is over.
During the worst of the heat, I've been indoors reading the Shelby Foote history of the Civil War. It's a huge 3 volume book, and right now I'm reading about the final weeks of the war.
A few of the young eggplant outdoors don't look too good, but I've still got eight more plants that I've not put out yet. I gave 5 additional away to the lady who gave me the manure. She said the hawks are getting bad, always swooping down and snatching her chickens.
The almonds are developing a hard shell, and the outer fruit, which looks like a flat peach is beginning to split.
On the hottest days, I wait till almost sundown to walk the dogs, but it makes me a little nervous because rattlesnakes come out at dusk. I haven't seen any, but I worry that Pogi, especially, would go after one and get bit.
