I've concluded that my avocado leaf burn stems, not from the sun, but from a buildup of salts in the soil. Avocados are apparently the most sensitive of fruit trees, and since I irrigate with well water, I must leach the soil every so often to flush away the salt concentration.

I went through the tomato plants and pinched off a lot of foilage, hoping to direct the vital energies toward fruit production. I see little beans now forming, which is good, because I'm almost out of frozen vegetables.

A good solution to the hard well water would be to set up some rain barrels and collect a supply of soft water. It probably won't rain again until November, or so.
